"English Learners communicate for Social and Instructional purposes within the school setting." ESOL Standard 5 "English learners communicate information, ideas,and concepts necessary for academic success in the content area of Social Studies." SSCG 15: Demonstrate knowledge of the criminal justice process Overview: The intent of this standard is to describe the purpose and processes of the criminal justice system in the United States and the rights of due process as an integral part of our constitutional rights. Students will learn the differences between different categories of crimes and possible sentences and punishments for crimes. The different processes for civil cases versus criminal cases will be analyzed. SSCG 16: Demonstrate knowledge of local, state, and national elections. Overview: The intent of this standard is to understand the historical development, organization, and role of political parties; examine the nomination and election process in the United States; examine campaign funding and spending and the role of interest groups; and analyze the influence of the media, campaign advertising, and public opinion polls on American politics. SSCG 17: Demonstrate knowledge of the organization and powers of state and local government described in the Georgia Constitution. Overview: The intent of this standard is to examine the structure of local government in Georgia, analyze the relationship among state and local governments, examine the sources of revenue for local governments, analyze various services provided by state and local government, and analyze limitations on state and local government in the State of Georgia. SSCG8 Demonstrate knowledge of the legislative branch of government. a.Cite the formal qualifications for representatives and senators listed in the Constitution. b.Describe the election process for representatives and senators and how the 17th Amendment impacted the election of senators. c.Compare the terms of office for each chamber of Congress and explain the Founders’ intent. d.Compare and contrast the powers of each chamber of Congress (e.g., power of the purse, 16th Amendment, treaties, etc.) e.Explain the steps in the legislative process. f.Explain the functions of various leadership positions and committees within the legislature. g.
